Interested graduating high school seniors and college students currently enrolled in an institution of higher education may apply. Department of Education Chapter High School Academic Scholarship

 

 

 

 

The Department of Education Chapter of Blacks In Government, a non-profit organization, is accepting applications from high school students who will be graduating in 2010 and continuing their education.  The Scholarship Program was established in May 2007. A complete application package must be submitted to the scholarship committee no later than Friday, April 30, 2010.  The package must consist of a scholarship application form, a written essay, an official high school transcript, a certification of academic standing, letter of recommendation, and a recent color photograph.

CRITERIA

 

The applicant must be graduating from an accredited secondary educational institution or attained a GED.

 

The applicant must be accepted for admission to at least one accredited institution of higher education or trade school for the Fall 2010 school term.

 

The applicant must provide an official high school transcript or GED certificate.

The applicant must provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher, community leader, or pastor.

 

QUALIFYING COMPETITIVE FACTORS

 

Submit an essay on one of the following topics: 

  • What is your intended degree? How might your degree impact your life and/or community?
  • Who has influenced and/or shaped your life and how? How do you plan to exemplify the impact this individual has made in your life?
  •  How do you plan to impact and elevate your community? What changes would you like to make? How would you go about changing/improving your surrounding community?
  •  What does education mean to you? How has it impacted your life? And how

               do you plan to utilize your education?

The essay should be at a minimum 400 words; typed; Times Roman 12-point font; and, double-spaced.  Essays will be rated on content, grammar, organization, and originality.

 

A mandatory personal interview is required.  This interview will consist of an oral presentation of the applicant’s essay and a question/response period.  Only finalists determined by essay and cumulative GPA scores will be interviewed.  This interview may occur in person or via telephone if the winner does not reside in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area.

 

Applicants will receive written notification of the status of their applications via email by May 30, 2010.   Students selected to receive a scholarship must provide verification of enrollment to Mr. David M. Jackson, President, ED Chapter of BIG at David.Jackson@ed.gov by Friday, October 29, 2010. Verification shall consist of the name and address of the institution you will be enrolled in the  Fall 2010 and your student account number.  Failure to meet this deadline will result in forfeiture of your scholarship.
